Sports massage is specifically geared toward athletes. It is used to help prevent injuries, prepare the body for athletic activity, maintain optimal condition, and to help recover from workouts and injuries. Sports massage has three basic forms: pre-event massage, post-event massage, and maintenance massage.
Deep tissue massage is aimed at deeper tissue structures of muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses the same techniques as Swedish massage, but with more intense pressure. It is also more focused to release chronic muscle tension or "knots" (also known as "adhesions").
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist applies special cups for a few minutes to create suction. Cupping is used for many purposes including help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and well-being. Cupping is also used as a type of deep-tissue massage.
Medical massage is outcome-based massage, primarily the application of a specific treatment targeted to the specific problem(s) the patient presents with a diagnosis and are administered after a thorough assessment/evaluation by the medical massage therapist with specific outcomes being the basis for treatment.
